Buna
Maria Zankovetska National Drama Theater
Based on a true story of a family from Bukovina, this ethno-horror social drama reveals the difficulties people face in a Ukrainian village on the verge of globalization, resulting in poverty and culture scarcity. Buna ("grandmother" in Bukovinian dialect), the main character, personifies Ukrainian traditions, superstitions and beliefs. Old Buna has to raise her 19 year old granddaughter Orysia on her own and provide an education deemed taxing by a modern person. This performance focuses on “children who are brought up by grandparents and do not get to see their parents, on young people leaving their native countries, forgetting the language and customs of their ancestors" (day.kyiv.ua). "Where we are, why we are here and where we should go next - this all needs to be rethought" (zbruc.eu).
